When unemployment hits 22%, desperation comes closer to Greeks, especially the younger generation, who predict a dark future for their homeland and have decided to leave. They are willing to migrate “anywhere” as they often tell each other in pursuit of a permanent job.
According to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship, more than double the amount of permanent migrant visas have been granted to Greek nationals during the past year.
More specifically, 279 Greeks were issued a permanent visa from July 2011 to April 30th, 2012 while most of them choose Melbourne as their final destination. 253 visas granted were classified as “family” visas as well.
George Katsaromitsos, a Greek migration agent living in Sydney, states he has received about 150 inquiries from Greeks willing to move to Australia in the following months. Taking into consideration those calling Katsaromitsos and other agents to receive general information about life in Australia, working conditions and wages, this number would be higher.
In 2011, the average age of Greeks having migrated to Australia ranged from 22 to 40. We easily realize that due to the debt crisis, Greece is losing the most active sectors of its society, which would have a major negative impact in its future.
Here is a little info for those intending to head to Australia in the future: Australian working visas require sponsorship prior to entering the country. For skilled people, Australia grants visas only to those having qualifications in professions the country needs employees to cover positions. The average time for a visa to be granted can reach up to 36 months and can cost over $4000.
