Dr. Zacharoula Nikolakopoulou lives and works in London. However, she is not just a pretty Greek woman working abroad since Mrs Nikolakopoulou won the Top New Investigator Award at the 10th Congress of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids & Lipids 2012 held in Vancouver for her work entitled “The effect of OMEGA-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on oral and epidermal squamous cell calcinoma.”
According to Dr. Nikolakopoulou’s research, Omega-3 fatty acids of fatty fish, such as salmon, trout and sardine, curb the development of cancer in some cases. This research is part of her PhD at the Queen Mary University in London held under supervision and guidance of Dr. Ken Parkinson and Dr. Adina Michael-Titus.
“It is a great honor to me,” said Dr. Nikolakopoulou in an interview with Greek newspaper Ethnos. “I truly believe there is hope in Omega-3 fatty acids for the prevention and treatment of cancer,” she added.
The Greek scientist lives in London but would like to return to Greece in the future “much wiser.” She comments, however, that the UK offers her more possibilities for scientific research than she would have back in her homeland.
Dr. Zacharoula Nikolakopoulou comes from Mouzaki in the Messinia Prefecture. She studied biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and earned her master’s degree in immunology at the Imperial College of London and later conducted research on leukemia at the University College of London.
