Samaras Ready to Begin Privatizations

The Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, has sent out early messages over his government’s determination to carry out the structural reforms demanded by the troika, paving the way for the review of some points of the memorandum, as requested by Greece.
Political observers in the Greek capital say that the government’s announcement of the first privatizations and the reform of public administration – including the closure of redundant state companies and the reduction in staff numbers – is only a matter of time.
Newspaper reports say that the list of the first redundant companies has already been drawn up and is in the Prime Minister’s hands. The list includes 60 organizations, for which the law has been prepared for some time, pending only the final decision from the competent minister.
Meanwhile, the media have reported extracts from a letter than Samaras, who was unable to attend the European summit in Brussels, sent to the heads of state and of government in the European Union, in which he confirmed Greece’s political desire to fullfil all of the commitments that it has undertaken, signing an agreement with its partners and underlining the government’s decision to accelerate the privatization program. With reference to the country’s real economic situation, Samaras wrote that “certain corrections of the programme would be necessary to control the very high rate of unemployment and to reverse the catastrophic recession in which Greece finds itself for the fifth consecutive year”.
