Coalition Government Under Question

The first fact that seems to have perturbed observers in Greece is how the new government is comprised only by MPs of New Democracy, including non-political entities and six technocrats, with no participation by either PASOK or Democratic Left.
Observers here say this is not a true government of national coalition or “salvation,” as Samaras insists on calling it.
Even though the agreement stands that both Venizelos and Kouvelis will give Samaras the vote of confidence in parliament next week, Samaras is essentially alone against mounting pressure to proceed with convincing Greeks that deeper cuts in wages, pensions and public spending need to be presented to Parliament as soon as the first plenary session.
Domestic analysts and global observers and media, from the Economist to The New York Times and the German newspaper Die Welt, say the new government will be short-lived and its multi-faceted work almost impossible to achieve.
We spoke to renowned European politics expert and SYRIZA euro-MP Nikos Houdis, about an objective estimation of the new government’s immediate future.
Meanwhile, we are told that the two-year extension Greece is ready to ask from European leaders is not a re-negotiation as it is already mentioned in the current agreement.
Samaras’ New Democracy and Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union are member parties of the European People’s Party, Europe’s largest centre-right umbrella party.
On Friday afternoon, both Samaras and the new finance minister, the governor of the National Bank Of Greece Vasilis Rapanos, fainted, close associates saying the urgency of the demands on these two men is titanic.
The coming week is crucial in Greek politics as the Samaras coalition will try and contain the fierce anti-memorandum opposition in Parliament, from the Greek Communist Party, SYRIZA, the Independent Greeks, the former members of New Democracy and the far-right extremist party, and the Neo-Nazi movement Golden Dawn.
