Israeli Journalist Beaten in Downtown Athens by Extremists (video)

The Jerusalem Post published an article documenting the beating one of its own journalists received at the hands of a hooded gang of men in downtown Athens outside the Archaeological Museum of Athens. Gil Shefler had been sent on assignment to Greece to cover extremism and its after-effects  in the country shortly after far-right Golden Dawn entered the Greek Parliament on May 6.
According to Shefler, on Wednesday afternoon he visited the outer area of the Museum to take pictures of the illegal immigrants gathered around it. Suddenly, a group of 20 hooded men, carrying sticks in their hands, started beating the immigrants.  The journalist switched his camera on to record the incident. When the extremists saw him, they started to beat him as well.  “I’m lucky they did not injure me more,” he stresses in the video.
Mr Shefler reports that he cannot be sure about the group’s political identity. “They could be far-right or far-left but the truth is that extremism is obvious in Greece at the current time,” continued the correspondent.
Some time ago, a colleague of Shefler’s had called the Golden Dawn spokesman, Ilias Kasidiaris, to arrange an interview which he turned down on the pretext that he does not have discussions with Israeli people for political reasons. Kasidiaris has been given due warning about his behavior by the authorities as this morning he punched a female Communist MP on live TV show.
