Fundraiser by Australian Church for Greeks in Need

The Greek-Orthodox Archdiocese in Australia will hold a fundraiser next Sunday, June 10th, whose goal will be to support the troubled Greek people. The clergy has already been informed across the whole country.

“Of course, we can’t offer major support, no matter how much money will be collected during the fundraiser. We, however, would want to express our solidarity and offer a little consolation to the victims of this devastating situation in this way,” noted Archbishop Stylianos in his official announcement.  He pointed out that “tragic situations, affecting  the most vulnerable sectors of society such as the elderly, children and in general our fellow people in need” are to  be seen in Greece due to the financial crisis, so “it would be odd if we didn’t proceed to organize a fundraiser as we have done in the past for so many ‘foreigners’, while the current situation affects our brothers of identical national and religious identity.”

His Emminence Archbishop Stylianos expressed his hope that the Greek-Australians will hear his call and collect a great sum this coming Sunday, which will immediately be sent to the Church of Greece to be used primarily to provide food rations across Greece.

Meanwhile, the “Hellenic Democratic Initiative” which was founded by young Greeks in Melbourne has launched a fundraising campaign to support Greek families living below the poverty level amid the economic crisis. This movement by Greek-Australians recently announced its collaboration with the nonprofit organization “Boroume” (“We Can”).
