Venizelos Has Handed Back the Mandate to President; New Elections Seen as Likely

Greek socialist leader Evangelos Venizelos has handed back the mandate to seek partners for a coalition government to the country’s president after three rounds of negotiations proved fruitless.
Greek President Karolos Papoulias now takes over negotiations with party heads in a last-ditch attempt to form a cross-party administration. The focus is likely to shift to an all-party council that may be convened by the president as soon as Sunday or Monday. If no deal is reached, the president will call fresh elections, likely to take place in the middle of next month, with radical leftists leading in the polls.
“New Democracy, PASOK and Democratic Left agree on the need and ability of forming a [coalition] government of pro-European forces,” PASOK party leader Evangelos Venizelos said during the meeting he had with Karolos Papoulias.
“The participation of [Coalition of Radical Left] in this government is a pre-condition. I have said that to Mr. Tsipras; I have not received a positive response, but I think that this is where you should focus your efforts…I can see some bits of optimism; I hope I will contribute in the efforts to form a government,” Papoulias said.
Venizelos handed the mandate back Saturday. He was the third party leader to try to find partners for a governing coalition after elections last Sunday gave no party enough votes to form a government.
