German News: Troika Cancels Visit to Athens Ιn the Absence of Goverment

German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported today that the EU/IMF/ECB Troika will not follow through with its planned mid-May visit to Athens due to pending political developments.
According to its sources, the German daily noted that the Troika will await all the “democratic processes” to take place before visiting Greece, i.e. the process of the formation of the new government after the May 6 election.
“The mission was never cancelled because there has never been a set date for it,” said European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj, adding that as soon as the new Greek government is formed, the mission will then visit the Greek capital city.
In the meantime, Dr. Heribert Dieter from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Berlin, suggests in his article in the online edition of the daily newspaper Die Zeit, that Greece proceed with a referendum in order for its people to decide whether they want to remain in the EU or not.
According to Dr. Dieter, it is completely unclear what Greek society would like its future to look like. “On the one hand, one out of three Greeks voted for parties that oppose the austerity reform policies agreed, while opinion polls show that one out of three Greeks wishes for the country to remain within the EU,” wrote the German academic.
