The Greek Coastal Guard has intercepted a suspicious boat off the coast of Astakos, in southwestern Greece. The boat was carrying 40 male illegal immigrants. Both the captain and the immigrants have been arrested.
Although Greek border police and Frontex (the European force that controls EU borders) have stepped up checks, the number of illegal immigrants arriving in Greece from Turkey continues to rise. The radio station Skai says that between 100 and 300 illegal immigrants from African and Asian countries, depending on the season and weather conditions, enter Europe every day after crossing Turkey.
