Senator Nick Xenophon Found Himself ‘Trapped’ in Malaysian Demonstrations

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon was “trapped” in a demonstration in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and had tear gas fired in his direction.

The politician called on Australian government to disapprove of the human rights violations in Malaysia. He also suggested that Australia should reconsider its relationship with Malaysia.

Xenophon visited Kuala Lumpur in order to stay informed about the country’s electoral reforms. While watching demonstrators protesting about the election processes in Malaysia, police fired tear gas and chemical laced-water at them.

“This is a country that the Australian government is glad to do refugee swaps with,” commented the politician. Every year, the federal government swaps asylum seekers with refugees from Malaysia and it raises serious questions about the legality of offshore processing, according to Senator Xenophon.

Malaysians demonstrate against their country’s election law because they believe that current Prime Minister Najib Razak is benefiting from the election system.
