Der Spiegel: Greek Politicians Who Brought On Crisis Now Promise Changes

German weekly magazine Der Spiegel did a feature on the May 6 Greek elections. Under the title “Athens calls on elections” and the subtitle “What crisis?,” the editor writes that the political candidates, “especially those who led Greece to crisis,” promise now that, after the elections, everything will be different.

She also comments that Greece has not taken many steps forward to regeneration.

In regards to conservative leader Antonis Samaras, she says: “Samaras proclaims a fresh start and brings his predecessor Konstantinos Karamanlis to praise him in public. For two and a half years, after Karamanlis was defeated by George Papandreou’s PASOK party, he has been silent. He did not comment on neither the financial crisis or the mistakes made during his governance period.”

“He now supports Samaras for President,” continues the German journalist, “as if nothing has ever happened!”

She also says that “Antonis Samaras is an opportunist, thirsty for the Greek governance, who wants to be the only powerful governor after the May 6 elections,” despite the exit polls. Der Spiegel comments also that the current political situation in Greece is as if it is a blooming state and not a bankrupt one.

But the journalist also details Evangelos Venizelos’ background as well. “He is 55 years old, former Minister of Finance and confidant of Andreas Papandreou, father of George Papandreou (both former PMs of Greece). Andreas was the politician responsible for turning the Greek state into a dysfunctional country.”

“Venizelos now declares war against this kind of state,” says the German journalist, “despite that he was one of the people creating it!”
