Papademos, troika and the European markets may be threatening the Greek people that a return to the old coin could signify an economic collapse for the country, but some Greek businessmen in the United Kingdom seem to not be so frightened by such declarations.
On the other hand, many economists have been anticipating the return of the drachma for some time but up until now, attempts to use the old Greek currency would have proved futile. However, for one week only – from April 23-28 – diners visiting The Real Greek restaurant in Bankside, London, will be welcome to pay for a meze dish in the country’s old currency, Drachma.
TRG Operations Manager Christos Karatzenis explained, “With Greece’s economic worries being such a big focus in the news at the moment, we thought we’d lighten the mood by letting diners pay with the old Drachma they have laying around.” The restaurant wants to look at the bright side of Greece’s continuing financial woes and send a hopeful message to Greek people.
“Greece is making progress but it’s far from out of the woods, and with financial experts saying 2012 will be the decider as to whether we should return to the Drachma or not, it seemed like the appropriate time to let customers raid their ‘man drawers’ and put their old Drachma to good use,” adds the restaurant manager.
The restaurant group, which started out as a fine dining establishment in Hoxton, has grown steadily in recent years and now boasts seven sites across London – Westfield Stratford City, Westfield London, Hoxton, Bankside, Marylebone, Spitalfields and Covent Garden.
