Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (TDF) Opens March 9th

The TDF is a leading European Documentary Festival, carried out every March in Thessaloniki since its inception in 1999 under the artistic direction of Dimitri Eipides. Its main thematic sections are: Recordings of Memory, Portraits-Human Journeys, Stories to Tell, Habitat, Planet in Peril, Music, Views of the World, Greek Panorama.
Through its tributes and retrospectives, the TDF focuses on filmmakers with unique cinematic voices, internationally renowned for their contribution to the documentary genre. The Festival’s side events host exhibitions, masterclasses, round-table discussions, publications, concerts and parties.
This year the festival (from the 9th until the 18th of March) opens with the Tony Gatlif’s film Indignados, which premiered at Berlin film festival.
Despite the economic difficulties in Greece, the organizers of the festival have managed to bring together 185 films — including 75 local productions — from more than 40 countries.
Among the several presentations of documentaries, there is Bryan Carter’s “Dublin’s Trap,” a Belgian documentary that will make its world premier at Thessaloniki and explores the impact of the EU’s immigration policy on Greece through the eyes of an Afghan asylum seeker.
Moreover, the TDF is going to pay tribute to Danish documentaries, presenting the following films: ‘The Ambassador’ of Mads Bruger, ‘Half a Revolution’ of Omar Shargawi and Karim El Hakim, ‘Putin’s Κiss’ of Lise Birk Pedersen, ‘Au Pair’ of Nicole Horanyi and Heidi Kim Andersen, ‘The Samurai Case’ of Eva Mulvad, ‘Love Addict’ of Pernille Rose Groenkjaer and ‘Ballroom Dancer’ of Christian Bonke & Andreas Koefoed.
This year’s TDF is intended to be a big success once again, since last year 44,000 people were packed at TDF theaters, which include the central Olympion and Pavlos Zannas cinemas in Thessaloniki.
At this year’s festival approximately 460 films will be available, including all the films that are screened as part of the official program.
