Αustralia Focuses on the Greeks This Weekend

The attention of Australia is focused on the Greeks this weekend. And this is not only due to Greek Festivals taking place in the cities of Melbourne and Sydney, but also because of the rapid developments in the Australian political scene.

Only 48 hours away from the Monday ballot that will determine her position in the Labor Party, the Australian PM, Julia Gillard, will attend the Greek Glenti of the “Antipodes Festival” in Lonsdale Street. Leader of the Opposition in the Australian House of Representatives, Tony Abbott, who has been favored by the inter-party fight between Gillard and Kevin Rudd claiming her leadership in the Labor Party, will also attend the Greek Glenti.

Many ministers, MPs, mayors and Australian media will also attend the Greek event, since they will all want to record the last public appearance of the PM and Opposition Leader before the Monday ballot.

Thousands of Greek-Australians will join the Greek Glenti, not only to see from a close distance the political leadership of the country, but to sing along to the songs of Greek singer Pantelis Thalassinos and other Greek-Australian artists and bands.

Parallel to the Lonsdale Glenti, the Greek Festival of Sydney will also take place in Darlings Harbour. It is estimated that this year’s festivities will take the form of a solidarity movement towards Greece and its people.

Neos Kosmos daily has issued an impressive cover page on Thursday, reading “I believe in Greece”, and has distributed thousands of posters and stickers with the same slogan on them.

In the venue of the Antipodes Festival there will also reportedly be a huge placard reading “We support Greece”, while the Greek Community will give pins with the same slogan to the Australian politicians and all visitors.

The Greek Glenti of Sydney is being held this year amidst serenity and normality regained within the organized Greek Community after the reintegration of the Sydney Community to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia last year.
