Patras Science Centre Organizes Educational Teleconferences with Diaspora Schools

Discovering, even as a child, that Greece isn’t just what one can see on a map, but something greater, is surely an amazing feeling.
Specifically the center wanted children to discover the cradles of Hellenism scattered around the world and be able to communicate in real time, with the help of modern technologies, with their peers who are of Greek origin on other side of the Atlantic.
High school students from Patras are able to experience this through educational teleconferences organized by Patras Science Center with Greek Diaspora schools.
“In the original planning of Patras Science Center, one of the key components of its function was student interaction between Diaspora children and children from Greece, with the utilization of modern technology” states Professor of Mathematics, Spyros Pnevmatikos from the University of Patras to ANA – MPA, who spearheaded the materialization of the idea.
“Regarding the teleconferences with Diaspora Schools”, Mr. Pnevmatikos stated that “it was necessary to reach the right time for a stimulus, which was eventually provided by SAE U.S.A. President, Theodore Spyropoulos, after a very interesting discussion we had last summer in Athens”.
The first teleconference was something new for all children, on both parts, and this of course initially created anxiety and hesitation. Nonetheless, a few minutes later, and after initial thoughts were put across, the actual discussion was launched.
Along with students of Greek origin, 2nd and 3rd generation, American students of other ethnicities also participated in this learning experience. In this way, students have the opportunity to witness another side of Greece, expressed from our youth, and this is particularly important in this significant period our country is currently going through. Interaction between children was carried out with no problem whatsoever.
It is worth noting that the initiation of this student interaction with Socrates Academy, last December, but also with Archimedes Academy in Miami, which took place yesterday afternoon, has attracted the interest of schools and universities in other states, with which the Center is planning a series of consecutive teleconferences on specific topics in mathematics, informatics, physics – and more.
