Papademos: Difficult Year Ahead

Citizens in debt-plagued Greece had to prepare themselves for a ‘very difficult year,’ Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said Saturday, in his New Year address. He noted that solidarity and determination were necessary to retain Greece’s accomplishments of the last decades.
All austerity efforts had to continue, to prevent the crisis from leading to an ‘uncontrollable catastrophic insolvency,’ Papademos said.
‘The next three months will be critical and will define the course of Greece in the coming decades,’ the premier said, adding that 2012 could become a year of hope, if all political forces worked together.
Papademos added that it was necessary to reduce state spending and rebuild the economy on healthy foundations in order to become competitive again.
‘We are experiencing the worst international and domestic crisis of the postwar period. We can overcome it. But there are now magic solutions. We must believe in ourselves again,’ Papademos said, asking Greeks to put their political differences aside.
