University of Crete Included in Worldwide Leiden Ranking List

The University of Crete has once again been included in a prestigious ranking. This time by the Leiden University in the Netherlands.

The Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 measured the scientific performance of 500 major universities worldwide. Using a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators, the ranking aims to provide highly accurate measurements of the scientific impact of universities and of universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration.

The University of Crete ranked 324th worldwide and 149th European-wide, while it is the first of the total 6 Greek universities that were included in the ranking.

The Dean of the Greek University commented that this is the second most important distinction for the University within two months. “Our university ranked higher than other big institutions, such as the Lomonosov, Technion, etc.” said Mr. Stefanou.

The first distinction came with the inclusion of the University of Crete in the “Times Higher Education” ranking list. The Greek university was the only Greek representative in that list and managed to climb up the list from last year’s ranking place.

In the Leiden Ranking 2011/12, 5 more Greek universities are included: the University of Ioannina, the National Technical University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Patras and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as the top universities of the country.

The first place of this academic year’s list was covered as usual by MIT, with Princeton, Harvard, Rice and Stanford Universities making up the top 5 list.
