2,000 Illegal Immigrants Drown in Mediterranean Waters

The Committee on Immigration revealed alarming figures about the illegal immigration from African countries, especially North Africa and Maghreb regions. Notably, 1971 illegal migrants died off  Mediterranean coasts during 2011.
Dutch MP Tineke Strik has been asked to prepare a report on the deaths of people who have died on boat in the Mediterranean since January 2011.
Strik stated: “There have been allegations that migrants and refugees are dying after their appeals for rescue have been ignored.  Such a grave allegation must be urgently investigated.  I intend to look into the manner in which these boats are intercepted – or not – by the different national coastguards or even military vessels. I also intend to speak to witnesses directly involved in reported incidents, and put questions to national authorities.”
On May 8, the Guardian newspaper reported that 61 people on boat escaping from Libya had died after their appeals for rescue had been ignored by armed forces operating in the Mediterranean.
The Committee on Immigration will try to provide new proposals with regard to the laws of international right at the waters, especially in cases of rescue operations by coast guards, and work on the evaluation of coordination between the European authorities, the United Nations and the European Agency for the management of cross-border cooperation.
