Greek-American Homeowners Association to Hold Thanksgiving Lunch

Every year, the Greek American Homeowners Association (GAHOA) feeds over 1,000 Queens residents on Thanksgiving Day.

Run by Honorary President and Chairman of the Thanksgiving Day dinner George Alexiou and major contributor George Fakiris, volunteers will gather at the annual luncheon to serve Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings to people in need, including the elderly, the homeless and those looking for good food and company. They also deliver both cooked meals and uncooked turkeys to those who cannot attend.

Last year, more than 1,700 people attended the lunch, devouring 80 turkeys weighing 30-35 pounds. This year, GAHOA expects to serve approximately 600 people at the hall, and to deliver over 500 10- to 12-pound turkeys and send out 1,200 dinners. In addition to traditionally prepared turkey, there of course will be gravy, sweet potatoes and peas, salad, dessert, soda and wine. Singer-guitarist composer Serafim Lazos will provide Greek music, adding to the festive atmosphere. The event will be held at the GAHOA headquarters, 23-49 31st St., Astoria.

This year marks the 21st consecutive year that GAHOA will provide free dinners. Many elected officials are expected to attend, including state Senator Mike Gianaris, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr., as well as Archbishop Dimitrios.

Among the many generous private citizens and local businesses contributing are Chef Rocco Sacramone of Trattoria L’incontro, who will donate 120 raw turkeys, as he has done in the past, local philanthropist Fakiris, Artopolis and Lefkos Pyrgos Bakeries donating desserts, and many local dinners which are donating three to six cooked turkeys each.
