While the European Union steps up pressure for Greece to form rapidly a national unity government to implement the new bailout programme, or Greece will see its way out of the euro-zone Papandreou and Samaras still haven’t reached an agreement and put their bloated, oversized egos above the country’s fate.
EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn told Reuters: “We have called for a national unity government and remain persuaded that it is the convincing way of restoring confidence and meeting the commitments.”
Papandreou’s suicidal referendum tactic breached confidence with his euro zone partners last week and had put Greece on a path towards leaving the euro, but now “it appears that Greece is on its way back from the brink”, Rehn stated.
“Work has been going on in Athens to mend that confidence and we need a convincing report on this by Finance Minister (Evangelos) Venizelos tomorrow in the Eurogroup,” Rehn told Reuters in a telephone interview.
