New York Times: Papandreou's Referendum Jeopardizes the Euro

Greek PM’s call for referendum is raising questions “about Greeceā€™s ability to follow through on its part of the hard-won deal to stabilize the euro” says an article by the New York Times, a few hours after George Papandreou made the shocking announcement about his intention to ask Greeks to answer with a big “yes” or a big “no” on whether they agree with the latest rescue deal Greece agreed with its euro-zone partners.
The article also refers to the immediate effects the surprisingĀ announcementĀ had, as Standard & Poorā€™s 500-stock index fell almost 2.5 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial fell about 2.3 percent. It also refers to government sources according to which the referendum is going to take place in December or even January but is still not clear on what exactly the voters will be asked to answer.
