Cartoonists Draw Greek Debt Crisis

“Bad times are good times for cartoonists,” said Maria Tzaboura, a cartoonist for the Greek newspaper Proto Thema who sees humor as a form of protest. But cartoonists do not merely use humour to depict social circumstances but rather practice serious social commentary.
The economic crisis in Greece is providing them with the opportunity to draw current circumstances on paper in a scathing image or caption.
Some have lost their jobs while doing so. Caricaturist Tasos Anastasiou was recently dismissed from the newspaper Ta Nea for economic reasons. His letter to the journalists’ union, however, showed his personal belief that he was fired because he harshly criticized the government.

The Greek Cartoonist Association recently held an exhibition of crisis cartoons at the Benaki Museum in Athens.
