The trial for the eight Greek terrorist suspects has been postponed until later this month, as lawyers have announced a 24-hour nationwide strike today.
Additionally, the court held inside high security Korydallos prison near Athens cancelled the case to the 24th of October in order to enable the new defendant, a 36-year-old former civil servant who surrendered to authorities last week, to prepare his case.
The domestic terrorist group first appeared in 2003 and is known for firing a rocket-propelled grenade into the U.S. Embassy in Athens in 2007. They have also claimed to be responsible for bombing the Athens Stock Exchange and severely wounding a riot policeman in 2009 during a gun attack.
Three of the eight suspects – Nikos Maziotis, Panayiota Roupa and Kostas Gournas – are being held in pre-trial detention and have claimed to be political prisoners.
Roupa read today a statement to reporters, insisting that “The group is alive and will strike back against the dictatorship of the government and creditors who have imposed austerity on Greece”.
