Greeks Lodge Protest Against Sydney Morning Herald

After the strong opposition of members of the Greek community in Australia against an editorial article in an Australian newspaper, demanding the exit of Greece from EU and the Eurozone, the Intercommunal Committe of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Australia (S.S Wales) has been added to those who are against this publication.

In a letter addressed to Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, the chairman of the Intercommunal Committe, Panayotis Theofilou expressed his outrage, due to the fact that Paul Sheehan, the article writer, talks in generalities when referring to a whole country and its people.

Theofilou also said that the article is slanderous stating, “In fact, Greece is facing economic difficulties at the moment but it is not the only country having problems. Sheeman did not manage to describe the bad economic circumstances under which Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Italy even USA pulled through”.

“It is true that tax evation and bad government policies have led to the current economic difficulties of Greece. However, it is a slanderous statement when stating that these difficulties are because of deceits and that Greeks are frauds”.

“On the contrary,” adds Theofilou, “Greece is praiseworthy due to its great attempt for economic recovery”. Concerning the doping and match-fixing reports in the article, these happen everywhere, even in Australia”.

The letter concluded by saying that the relations between Greeks in Australia and Sunday Morning Herald Newspaper would not become bad, only because Paul Sheehan wrote negative comments on the current situation in Greece.
