Cyprus: The Illegal Regime Takes Advantage of Archaeological Sites to Host Festivals

Ancient Salamis and the Abbey of Bellapais have become a center of festive events by the illegal regime, which wants to attract tourism.
In particular, events that take place in the ancient theater of Salamis, as noted in a related story in the newspaper “Fileleftheros,” attract tourists a lot, as they have the opportunity to visit the illegal excavations carried out from August 1999, under the direction of Professor Ozguner of Ankara University and of students of the Eastern Mediterranean University.
The aim is to landscape the entire area covered by the Theatre and the High School of ancient Salamina.
The entire program is sponsored by Turkey and it is clear that Turkey’s aim is to promote Salamis as an international tourist destination, part of the cultural heritage of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, taking into account that Turkey manages one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.
The theater of Salamis was built in the 2nd century AD, in the same place where an earlier Hellenistic theater used to be located. It is the largest ancient theater in Cyprus with a capacity of 20,000 spectators.
