Open Electronic Medicine Auction a Great Success

Open electronic medicine auctions have been successfully held in Greece, announced Secretary of Health and Social Security Michael Timosidis to a parliamentary committee, stressing that for the first three drugs involved, there will be a cost reduction of 80% of the original prices.
As Vice President of Health Supplies Committee Apostolos Migas explained, ”the buying of these drugs, whose initial price was 2,167,000 euros, eventually cost 436,000 euros”. Answering questions of Members of Parliament, he noted that the quality of medicine is ensured by the controls of the National Organisation for Medicines (EOF).
“It is still the beginning,” he said, describing the unprecedented and very successful process by Greek standards.
Mr. Migas and member of the Health Supplies Committee Michael Kakouros reported that ”we have the tools to face the phenomenon of corruption in the area of supplies, but what was missing was the political will that now exists”. As they also reported, in terms of per capita drug costs, Greece is the highest among the EU countries.
