Official Statistics Reveal Unemployment Rate Rose to 15%

Unemployment in Greece has risen to 15% for the first quarter of 2011, according to Eurostat’s data. Greece is ranked fourth in EU-27 unemployment rates, following Spain (20.9%), Lithuania (16.3%) and Latvia (16.2%). Lower unemployment rates have been recorded in the Netherlands (4.2%), Austria (4.2%) and Luxembourg (4.5%). In terms of growing unemployment on an annual basis, Greece ranks first as the unemployment rate rose from 11% to 15%, followed by Bulgaria, Cyprus and Slovenia. The unemployment rate for ages under 25, reached 44.4% in Spain and 38.5% in Greece, while the EU average rate stands at 20.4%. Of course, the number of actual unemployed people in Greece remains unknown, as a large percentage is not recorded in official statistics, either because it is part-time or uninsured work.
