Fires on Zakynthos, Greece

Raging fires have been constantly breaking out in forest areas of Zakynthos since 10, July. On Monday, 11, July, another two fires broke out late at night, the first one in the region of Volimes, which, because of  strong winds, rapidly spread and the second one at 7 pm, in the forest areas of the region of  Anafonitria, in Orthonies.
A helicopter, three fire planes and the Fire department took part in the operation to extinguish the fires. On Sunday, July 10, firefighters managed to put out another fire in the region of Nerantzoules in Argasi.
The fire in the region of Istiaia, which broke out on July 10th, caused a great deal of damage and thousands of olive trees were burnt as well as part of the forest. A couple was also threatened by the fire, when they tried to save their piece of land.
As far as the cause of the fire is concerned, the possibility of arson has not been excluded, as three fires broke out at the same time in a forest area, where there are no Public Power Operation wires and at a time when there were no strong winds.
Fire also broke out in the region of Dipi, in Mytilini and the region of Chalandritsa in Patras. According to firefighters, no inhabited areas were in danger.
