The European Commission has decided to make a formal indictment against Greece at the European Court of Justice as it has not yet complied with European regulations. It has also not announced its plans regarding rubbish disposal, as it was obliged to.
Europe has asked Greece to stop using sanitary landfills and start recycling, reusing and recovering energy. In the European Union, 37% of the rubbish is buried, 24% is recycled, 18% is used as fertilizer and 20% is broken down. While in Greece 82% of the rubbish is buried in sanitary landfills, 17% is recycled, 2% is used as fertilizer and energy recovery does not take place.
