At 11 am in Geneva, a meeting began on the Cyprus issue between the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the leaders of both Cypriot communities, Demetris Christofias and Derviş Eroğlu. The meeting is expected to last approximately four hours. After the meeting, UN Secretary General will make a statement.
It is the third round of three-way talks that Ban Ki-moon has held with Greek Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot President Dervis Eroglu. The Greek and Turkish Cypriots remain divided over property, the right of return of the displaced, and security.
The United Nations wants an acceleration of negotiations. The Greek Cypriot side favors the acceleration, but prefers a “diagonal” negotiation of territory and property issues and the Turkish Cypriot side joins the meeting aiming at setting a timetable in the negotiating process.
