European Union’s decision on a second support program to Greece ensures the financing of the country for the next years in order to achieve stability and major reforms, said Prime Minister George Papandreou after the summit in Brussels.
He also pointed out that the prerequisite for the rescue program is the adoption of the medium-term program and the implementation law by the Greek parliament.
George Papandreou stated that the new package does not change the country’s fiscal targets, but noted that it would include a development plan which could help Greece though EU special funds and programs, and bilateral agreements on investments with other European partners.
He also stressed that European leaders acknowledge “the sacrifices of the Greek people”.
“We stood up, the country has embarked on a safe course and we should keep this course”, said the Prime Minister.
Regarding the government’s reform task, he said that it should try harder in order to reduce spending, fight tax evasion and form a fair tax system.
“We will do everything but at this point we want a broader consensus on a fair tax system. We urged all political parties, but we would advance on our own, we will not step back, we will do our best to create a fair tax system”, PM George Papandreou stated.
