Arrest of Greek “Businessman” of Melbourne’s Underworld Upsets Greeks

The agreement with the police of Victoria, which was concluded by one of the most important personalities of Melbourne’s underworld Tony Mokbel  (photo), who was arrested in 2007 in Greece, seems to have upset many Greek expatriates. Authorities of Australia had been looking for him for more than a year, are offering 1 million dollars. To find refuge in Greece, while he was free on bail, he spent more than 1, 7 million dollars and cooperated with other Greek expatriates. According to police information and press publications, at least three Greeks of Australia have helped Mokbel with his financial transactions and money laundering.

Mokbel confessed his guilt only for three serious cases of drug-trafficking, while after agreements with the police he was been discharged from seven more charges. As it was revealed, Mokbel was found non-guilty for the murder of Lewis Moran by the jury and he was not prosecuted for the murder of Michael Marshall.

As it is reported by authorities, Tony Mokbel had the support of a businessman, owner of a maritime company, in which Mokblel had invested money. When the last was arrested by Greek police, the businessman was with him, but he claimed that he knew him as “Steven Papas”, the name written in his passport. Tony Mokbel was planning to stay in Greece forever. He was living in a house for which he was paying €2,000 for rent! Interpol has issued an arrest warrant against the 41-year-old man, as he had been wanted by Australian authorities since 2006 for two murders and one drug case. The “baron” of the organized crime, was sentenced in absentia to nine months in jail for the import of two kilos of cocaine in Australia. He is also charged with instigation of the murder of Lewis Moran.

The Council of Public Prosecutors ordered Mokbel’s extradition to the Australian authorities.
