Greek Students Design Cars to Compete in European Eco-Marathon

Three high-tech cars were designed and constructed by Greek students that will represent Greece at the 27th European Eco-Marathon of Shell. Despite the economic difficulties, the groups from the Technical University of Crete and the Second Professional Lyceum of Egaleo worked hard and managed to get the “ticket” for the most important energy efficiency contest of Europe.
The Greek cars will compete with 219 similar structures from twenty-two European countries in the marathon to be held from the 26th to the 28th of May at the Eurospeedway track in Lausitz, Germany. The objective of the participants is to create a vehicle that consumes the least possible energy.
“We create from scratch the entire car. We have already made a new electronic board and built a new motor, “says Manos Polioudis from the group” Prometheus “of NTUA. For their third participation in the tournament, the twenty one undergraduate and graduate students of NTUA designed and built the electric car “Pyrforos”.
In contrast to the 2010 construction which needed hydrogen fuel cells, this year’s vehicle is 100% electric, and the motor is powered by battery. This translates to a 40% to 90% increase in efficiency. Given that the new car will be better in many other areas such as aerodynamics and engine, the students of NTUA are optimistic that “Pyrforos” will exceed 2000 km, consuming energy equivalent to one liter of 95 octane unleaded petrol.
