Greek Professor to Receive Honorary Doctorate by Michigan University

Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University Gerasimos Karampatsos, will be awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by the Department of Chemistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.). The event will take place on Wednesday, the 13thof April, at 11:00 am, at the Ceremony Hall of the Old Philosophy School of A.U.Th.
Gerasimos Karampatsos was born in 1932 in Messinia. When he graduated school he moved to the U.S.A. to study. He studied chemistry at Adelphi College and then started post-graduate studies at Harvard University, where he also got his doctorate degree. In 1960 he started his academic career as assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University and stayed there until the end of his career, serving as chairman for 11 years. In 1987, always keeping his position in Michigan University, he was asked to teach at the University 0f Crete, until his retirement in 1999. His scientific and research work on Organic Chemistry and Chemistry is really wide. He was honored with several awards including the ACS Award in Petroleum Chemistry (1971), Distinguished Faculty Awards at MSU (1971) and others. The Department of Chemistry of the Michigan State University has established in his honor annual lectures, with the title Karampatsos Lectures. In 2002, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, ARKIVOC magazine published a special volume for him.
