Greek & Cypriot Scientists Find Safer Test for Down’s Syndrome

Future mothers will soon be able to have a new safer blood test, which will predict if a fetus is likely to have Down’s Syndrome, without undergoing risky invasive tests. The head of the scientists who participated in the study was Philippos Patsalis, medical director of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. According to Reuters and “Science”, the scientists developed a method that analyses DNA and detects in blood DNA differences between the mother and the fetus, accurately predicting if the baby is at risk of developing the syndrome. Eudokia Tsaliki from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of “Mitera” Athens Hospital and from the Department of Biology of Athens University, as well as Voula Velissariou from “Mitera” participated in the research, too.
