Yannis Smaragdis Works with Sony Pictures on New Film

Yannis Smaragdis officially announced his cooperation with a distribution company of Hollywood, at a press conference held at a central hotel of Athens. The Greek director is preparing his new film about Ioannis Varvakis’ life and it the first time that a Greek movie is filmed under the “umbrella” of Sony Pictures and distributed internationally. The shootings are going to start in a few months and the film’s premiere will possibly be screened at cinema halls in October 2012. A large part of the shootings will take place in Russia. After the end of the conference Yannis Smaragdis said: “The reason why I decided to work on Varvakis was the fact that he was a great man of Greek shipping and Greeks used to earn a living from the sea for years. Greek ship-owners are the most powerful in the world, but Greeks generally don’t do marine jobs anymore. We have abandoned what we used to do for a living and what nourished our mind and imagination. It’s time for us to go back to the sea. If the film succeeds on that, I will be very happy”.
