Greek Journalists Attacked & Injured During Tahrir Square Clashes, Cairo

Two Greek journalists were attacked and injured early Thursday morning during the chaotic clashed at Tahrir Square in Cairo. Journalist Petros Papakonstantinou from daily Kathimerini and Giorgos Moutafis photographer from To Vima were attacked and injured by a group armed with sticks and knifes. While in the hospital police confiscated their passports and refused to give them back.
“Soldiers managed to free us from the group and we were taken by police to a hospital. However, the police confiscated our passports and wants to take us to the police station” Papakonstantinou told Greek private television Skai a while ago.
The journalist who got stabbed on the leg, described police’s behaviour as Egyptian “Midnight Express”. Meanwhile Greek embassy personnel that was summoned to the hospital “managed to solve the issue with the police and the journalists left the hospital”, Greek state Television Middle East correspondent told NET in a latest update. Panos Charitos said the journalists were attacked by a group of Mubarak supporters.
It looks as if the Mubarak regime is imposing major pressure to prevent journalists from shooting footage.
