Gov't Proceeds with 20% Cut Of Hospital Debts

Greek government proceeds with the cut of hospitals’ debts to pharmaceutical companies and suppliers, according to Capital. Minister of Health, Andreas Loverdos proposed the discount of 20% of the money owed by hospitals to pharmaceutical companies at his meeting with representatives of the companies, yesterday.
This amount exceeds 800 million euro. Sources indicate that companies initially dismiss the proposal, demanding the full amount, but it is assumed that they will have to negotiate due to the difficult financial situation.
The payment of hospitals’ debts for the period 2007-2009 through bonds is still pending. Moreover, the government is considering whether to proceed with the securitization of the insurance funds’ debts to hospitals.
The Ministry of Finance has already proposed the issue of bonds through big foreign investment banks in order to meet debts. This proposal had been also made by a foreign bank a year ago but it was dismissed, according to Kefalaio newspaper, published on 11th of December.
