Greek senator Jenny Mikakos will be serving as Shadow Minister for Seniors and Aging, Shadow Minister Assisting the Leader on Children and Young Adults and Shadow Minister for Youth Justice. The announcement of responsibilities for the Victorian shadow cabinet was made on Wednesday by Labor Leader Daniel Andrews.
Jenny Mikakos has been a Member of the Parliament of Victoria since 1999, firstly as the Member for Jika Jika Province and more recently, as the Member for the Northern Metropolitan Region. She was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Planning following the election of John Brumby as Premier of Victoria in July 2007, to the newly-established Department of Planning and Community Development. From 2002 untill 2007 she served as Parliamentary Secretary for Justice.
She began her involvement in politics as the youngest ever municipal Councillor elected to Northcote Council. Before being elected to Parliament, Jenny Mikakos was a solicitor for a number of prominent national legal and accounting firms. She is also passionate about social justice, human rights and environmental issues. Her interest in human rights is ongoing and she has been a member of Amnesty International for nearly 20 years.
