UN Secretary General Urges Cyprus to Speed Up Peace Talks

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has urged Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders to speed up their peace talks aimed at reunifying the divided island of Cyprus.
The UN office in Cyprus said Ban talked separately by phone late Thursday with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu regarding the UN brokered talks on Cyprus.
A press release said the UN Chief was closely following the developments in the negotiations through his special adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer.  He will issue a progress report next month.
“In his conversations with the leaders, the Secretary General noted that the process has been slow in recent weeks and urged them to achieve concrete advances in the current discussions on property in order to maintain momentum in the peace process,” said a UN related statement.
Christofias and Eroglu have been engaged in comprehensive negotiations on a settlement reuniting the island.
