“My Longing Istanbul: Immigration and Longing Stories by Greeks of Istanbul” is an exhibition featuring stories of 47 Greeks of Istanbul who left Istanbul at different times for different reasons. They know now live in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Supported by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, “My Longing Istanbul: Immigration and Longing Stories by Greeks of Istanbul” of the Lausanne Immigration Exchange Foundation will be presented at the Sismanoglio Megaro building – Cultural Center of the Consulate General of Greece on Friday, October 8th at 18:00 in Istanbul. The exhibition will be open to the public from 12:00 to 20:00 everyday between October 9-19th.
The exhibition presents a series of displays that has one for each interviewe. Each one contains old and new photographs along with excerpts from their interviews. Locations in visuals were photographed by the project team in accordance with information provided from the interviewees. The display boards are lined up according to the immigration dates of the interviewees.
During the 47 interviews which were realized by the Lausanne Immigration Exchange Foundation project team within the scope of the project, the interviewees were asked about their longing of Istanbul and their dates and reasons for immigration. Their families were also interviewed. The acquired data was further evaluated in a research report entitled: “My Longing Istanbul: Immigration and Longing Stories by Greeks of Istanbul”. The report is available in Turkish, Greek and English. It will be distributed to guests within the framework of the project and exhibition. The book also includes summaries of the interviews in Turkish and Greek.
Another important feature of the project is the documentary titled “My Longing Istanbul”. It is directed by Tahsin İşbilen and will be screened every hour at the exhibition.
After the exhibition that will take place at Sismanoglio Megaro in Istanbul, the second exhibition of “My Longing Istanbul” will be on display in Athens on the 23rd of October. The third one will be presented in Thessaloniki on the 6th of November.
