Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis this morning met with United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation Director-General Jacques Diouf as part of the latter’s visit to the Greek capital.
During the course of their meeting, which took place at Athens City Hall on Kotzia Square, Mayor Kaklamanis informed Mr Diouf of the social protection network the Municipality has developed in an effort to support individuals facing financial difficulties.
Mayor Kaklamanis outlined the City of Athens ’ strategic plan to provide the widest possible social protection net through the operation of the Social Grocery, Athens Market, Social Pharmacy and the Hotel for the Poor. He spoke in detail about the contribution made by the City of Athens Homeless Foundation ’s Meal Provision Centre.
Mr Diouf expressed his satisfaction with the social initiatives developed by the City of Athens and noted that he had not personally encountered a social protection network of this kind in any other city.
