Professor George Kannourakis is an oncologist at the Ballarat Cancer Research Center. The Center announced that it will launch a pioneer series of international research projects for the treatment of mesothelioma and lung cancer.
The new research of the Ballarat Cancer Research Center focuses on examination through clinical trials of special technical chemotherapy. This method administers medication which is estimated to exclusively target the cancerous tumor without affecting other organs; which is currently the case when a patient undergoes chemotherapy treatment.
The pioneer research of the Center was launched about three years ago. Today under the guidance of Professor Kannourakis, the center is able to implement clinical trials. Already the center has received authorization by the competent council. The clinical trials are expected to last three years as the team of scientists will use a series of medications on patients suffering from mesothelioma or lung cancer. In order to proceed with the clinical trials and help thousands of patients suffering from the aforementioned aggressive forms of cancer, the center will need $1.5 million dollars over the next three years. Currently the Ballarat Cancer Research Center receives funding from a special program of the Australian Research Institute. The institute is a public body funding many research programs on an annual basis. This funding is not enough to cover the total cost of clinical trials.
The scientific activities of the Ballarat Cancer Research Center are widely recognized. Many charitable foundations, businesses and other organizations have helped Professor Kannourakis and his team for the implementation of their cancer research programs.
The implementation of the clinical trials program, according to an announcement made by the center, will depend not only on state funding but also financial support provided by philanthropists from all over the country
As Professor George Kannourakis states, the clinical trials will help the scientific community discover new treatments against lung cancer.
