Greece has been a leading travel destination for European and American travelers. Now the nation has become very attractive to Asian tourists; especially the Chinese.
Athens and the islands are becoming increasingly popular. Hotels have recently experienced large amounts of bookings from China.
As mentioned on the website of the Media Department of the Chinese Government, excessive increases in prices of hotels in Sanya which is a popular tourist resort in China. It has led to an increase in arrivals in Greece and other European destinations. The manager of the famous Shanghai Ever Bright International Travel Agency stated: “despite a trip abroad is expensive, tourists have shown great interest to visit European countries this year, believing they would win more than the cost and value of the product”.
The Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism has been very effective in promoting the country in China. Last August the campaign: “You in Greece” charmed many Chinese in Shanghai. The campaign advertised Greece as the country with unique history and culture, exquisite food and beautiful romantic islands.
Part of this rise in popularity is by China’s increased wealth. 24 year old Sandy Wong who is a university student said: “As long as Chinese are getting richer, they will try to know as much as possible the European and Western world”.
It remains to be seen if Greece will make the visa procedures easier for tourists from China and if new direct flights will be introduced between the two countries.
