New institution of professional military service

A new institution of professional military service by salary – following the 9 months of mandatory military conscription – is established through a bill issued by the Ministry of Defence.
According to the Greek newspaper “TA NEA”, this regards the institution of the “Special Reserve Soldier”, which was presented by the Minister of Defense Evangelos Venizelos in a private meeting of the competent Committee of the Parliament.
Under the new arrangement, youths who have already completed their service to stay in the army for 6 months up to 3 years the longest, so as to tackle the issues of unemployment, pension coverage, work experience and skill certification etc. As it was deducted through the discussion the number of professional soldiers – hired at a 900 euro salary approximately and become regulars 7 years later – will lead to rationalization and will substantially be limited to areas of specialization where the Armed Forces have a real need for permanent staff.
This arrangement is included in a bill which, as it is mentioned by the newspaper will bring radical changes in the army. The voting of the bill is expected to take place this month. Members of the Committee of Defense and Foreign Affairs have already been informed on its content.
