New trial for the assassination of Mersina Chalvatzi

The serial killer Peter Dupas is going to a new trial for the assassination of Mersina Chalvatzi in 1997 at the Fawkner graveyard. Peter Dupas who is 56 years old and has already condemned to life imprisonment in 2007 for the assassination of 25-year- old Mersina Chalvatzi and for two other murders.

But, last year his trial was cancelled by the Court of Appeals because the judge of the case had not informed sufficiently the jury. His advocate requested from the Court the dismissal of the accused, presenting as an argument that Dupas case is “unique, so it is not possible for my client to be fairly judged”.

The Supreme Court, however, rejected this argument and as a result Dupas will finally lead to justice for the assassination of the girl 13 years ago. The dead body of Mersina was found at the Fawkner graveyard where she hag gone in order to go to her grand-mother’s grave.

Her parents are still waiting for the dispensation of justice. But, this new progress of the case gives hope to Chalvatzi’s family for one more time that at least 13 years later the murderer of their daughter will account for his crime.
