London: Greek restaurant barred from playing music after licence breach

A GREEK Cypriot restaurant in Potters Bar has been banned from playing music by a High Court judge after being caught doing so without a licence.
Lapathos, a company which runs Meze Taverna in the High Street, were handed the injunction after being caught playing copyrighted tracks there without a Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) licence.
An inspector visited the restaurant on January 23 and heard recorded music by the Gypsy Kings being played, but found there was no valid licence for the restaurant.
A letter was sent to the owners urging them to get a licence, which varies in cost depending on the size of the venue, but no reply was received and PPL took the enforcement action.
In court Mr Justice Norris barred the playing of any recorded music until a licence is acquired and ordered the owners, who were not represented in court, to pay £1,569 in legal fees.
If they breach the order they could be held in contempt of court, which has a maximum sentence of a £10,000 fine and six months in prison.
PPL represents 42,000 performers and 5,000 record distributors, representing 97 per cent of recorded music.
