Greek tragedy with a contemporary twist

Mt Maria College students Maddi Romcke and Meaghan Pudwell, both 17, prepare for the performance
WHAT would Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Antigone and a story of contemporary Aboriginal life have in common?
Students from Mt Maria College have the answer to the conundrum after they penned a modern take on the traditional story of love and loss.
Performing arts co-ordinator Lauren Mirabella said the budding thespians would take to the stage on Friday at a free performance.
“From studying (Antigone) in great detail the students have produced their own physical theatre performance incorporating the themes and ideas of Antigone,’’ she said. “They have written a modern play that transforms the traditional Greek aspects of Antigone into a contemporary Aboriginal tribal perspective.’’
She said the Year 11 and 12 students had been focusing on the heritage style of Greek theatre as well as the contemporary style of physical theatre.
“It is a fantastic performance, nothing like we have ever done before,’’ Ms Mirabella said.
The free performance of the play will be on Friday at the Mt Maria Mitchelton auditorium at 6.30pm.
