A Greek-Australian family’s A$2.5 (USD $1.7) million gift will strengthen Hellenic and diaspora studies at the University of Melbourne, extending the educational legacy of the late businessman Nikolaos Andrianakos.

The donation, announced by the Greek Community of Melbourne on November 5, supports the Nikolaos Andrianakos and Greek Community of Melbourne Hellenic Chair in Global Diasporas. Together with an earlier federal contribution, it brings the two investments to A$5 million.

The government’s A$2.5 million allocation for the chair followed a broader funding announcement in 2019. That package also allocated A$2.5 million to the Greek Centre in Melbourne.

Honoring a father’s commitment to education

Theo Andrianakos, founder and director of the Nikolaos Andrianakos Foundation, said his father never finished primary school but remained committed to helping young people succeed.

“Education was very important to my late father Nikolaos,” he said.

Born in Pikerni, a village in Greece’s Arcadia region, Nikolaos Andrianakos emigrated to Australia in the 1960s. He bought his first gas station in 1973 and built Milemaker into a fuel retail business, later expanding the family’s commercial property investments.

His philanthropy included support for Alphington Grammar’s educational and cultural facilities. The school’s Andrianakos Centre carries his name.

The foundation has continued that support beyond education. In June, the Greek Community of Melbourne announced its backing for the conversion of St. Dimitrios Church Hall in Prahran into a cultural center named after Nikolaos Andrianakos, with space planned for performances, exhibitions and community gatherings.

Studying the Greek experience beyond Greece

The university program appointed historian Andonis Piperoglou as its inaugural Hellenic Senior Lecturer in Global Diasporas in 2022. His role combines teaching about Hellenic culture with public engagement on migration, multiculturalism and the experiences of communities living outside their ancestral homelands.

Piperoglou’s work with Melbourne’s Greek community predates that appointment. A 2016 announcement for a Greek Centre seminar on early Greek settlement in Australia described his research into how community leaders navigated colonial politics, labor and racial identity in the 1890s. According to Piperoglou, the university program has attracted more than 300 student enrollments since 2022, supported honors and doctoral researchers, and developed international academic partnerships.

The university also envisaged partnerships with Hellenic institutions through art, music and exhibitions, bringing the research into community settings.

Community support for Greek studies

The donation adds to recent philanthropic support for Greek education in Australia. In a separate initiative announced in August, Peter and Mary Mitrakas committed A$90,000 to advanced Greek studies at La Trobe University.

That contribution supported efforts to restore a university pathway for students who had completed Greek at the Victorian Certificate of Education level.
