Three members of the same family died after their car fell into the sea at the port of Piraeus on Sunday evening, October 25, during heavy rain.
The vehicle entered the water at Gate E2 as it was disembarking from the passenger ferry Diagoras, according to Greek media reports. The victims were an 82-year-old man, his wife, and their 45-year-old son.
Authorities have not established the precise circumstances that led to the crash. Initial reports suggest that heavy rain and poor visibility may have contributed to the incident.
Rescue teams recover three bodies
The accident triggered a major search and rescue operation at the port. Coast Guard personnel, members of its Underwater Missions Unit, private vessels, and a vessel from the Port Pilot Service took part in the operation. Emergency medical teams also arrived at the scene.
Rescuers first recovered the 45-year-old man. They later located his parents, who remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle. The car was eventually brought to the surface, allowing rescue teams to recover the other two members of the family.
Questions remain about the circumstances
The incident occurred as the vehicle was leaving the ferry during adverse weather conditions. Reports have suggested that the driver may have lost control in the heavy rain, but the precise sequence of events has not been independently established.
The deaths have raised renewed attention to the risks of vehicle disembarkation at busy ports during periods of poor weather. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain subject to official investigation.
